Behind the Scenes: The Making of Goodsole

At Goodsole, every sneaker we create is a reflection of our values; a blend of style, comfort, and sustainability. But what really goes into the making of our latest collection? We’re pulling back the curtain to give you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the design and production process that brings our sneakers to life. From initial sketches in New Zealand to the final touches in our Southern China manufacturing facility, our journey is one of passion, precision, and purpose. We asked our founder, Shane Anselmi, to share insights on what makes our inaugural collection truly special.

The Creative Spark: Designing with Purpose

Goodsole’s first collection began with a simple yet powerful idea: to create footwear that not only looks good but does good. “Designing sneakers isn’t just about aesthetics,” says Shane. “It’s about crafting a product that people can feel good about wearing, knowing that it’s made with care for both the wearer and the world.”

Each design starts with a focus on sustainability, ensuring that every material we use aligns with our commitment to reducing our environmental impact. We wanted to use an organic cotton canvas on our Vulc sneakers because its production minimises carbon by using less fuel and energy, and there are no chemicals on organic cotton canvas so it feels better, and smells better.

Another important part of the design purpose was the consideration of what goes underfoot. Footbeds need to be not only incredibly comfortable, but hand washable for lasting freshness. We found a solution that is 25% plant-based material and 70% recycled fabric.

The Art of Design: Colours and Styles That Speak

Goodsole has set out to offer sneakers in a blend of contemporary design and timeless appeal, with each style crafted to tell its own story.

The Parallel collection has a hallmark of two linear stripes, encouraging you to walk alongside those you admire, offering styles in subtle yet striking colour combinations. Meanwhile, the Crossroads collection was inspired by the meeting of paths, featuring versatile designs ready for any journey. For those who love a touch of contrast, the Convergence overlay hints at a desire to make the world a better place, encouraging unity and a coming together of people. Our Free sneakers are our nod towards minimalism, with clean lines and soft white leather, perfect for those who seek freedom in simplicity.

Our Vulc Canvas collections are about urban adventures - think streetwear with style. Whether you prefer the classic low-top or a high-top with a modern twist, these styles are made for storytelling through every new scuff.

Craftsmanship and Collaboration: Inside Our Factory

Our sneakers are designed in New Zealand and are brought to life at our privately owned factory based in Southern China. This factory is more than just a production facility – it’s a space where craftsmanship meets collaboration. “Our craftsmen operate under a values-based system,” Shane explains. “We maintain close contact with our New Zealand team, ensuring that every pair of sneakers is made to the highest ethical and environmental standards.” With a near-equal gender balance and a focus on fair working conditions, this facility is a key partner in bringing our vision to life.

Sustainable Components: A Commitment to Quality

The footwear supply chain is notoriously complex, but at Goodsole, we’re committed to making it as sustainable as possible. “Sourcing the right materials is crucial,” says Shane. “We’re constantly working to build relationships with key suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability.” This dedication is evident in the materials we use – from the Leather Working Group Certified leathers to the recycled fabrics in our footbeds. Our focus on sustainability extends beyond the sneakers themselves to our packaging, which is made from fully recyclable cardboard and organic cotton travel shoe bags.

Innovating for the Future: The Road Ahead

As we continue to innovate, our focus remains on creating products that align with our values. “We don’t just want to make sneakers – we want to make a difference,” says Shane. This means constantly seeking out new ways to reduce our environmental impact and improve our processes. Whether it’s minimising surplus production by testing styles and colours before large orders or ensuring that our factory meets the highest ethical standards, every decision we make is guided by our commitment to doing good. “Our goal is to create a product that people can be proud of, knowing that it’s made with integrity,” Shane adds.

More Than Just Sneakers

Our latest sneaker collection is the result of a shared vision – to create footwear that’s as good for the world as it is for the wearer. From the design table in New Zealand to the factory floor in China, every step of the process is infused with care, creativity, and a commitment to sustainability. “At the end of the day, we want our customers to feel connected to the story behind their sneakers,” Shane concludes. “Because when you choose Goodsole, you’re not just buying a pair of shoes – you’re supporting a movement towards a better future.”
